the not-so-secret diary of a copywriter: an intro

Hello hello! This is a New Thing, and I’m hoping I’ll stick with it. Let’s see, eh?

If you look back at the publish dates on my blog posts here, you’ll see I’ve been, er, less than consistent of late.

I was finding it hard to focus. But then I stumbled on the idea of writing a kind of ‘diary of a freelance copywriter’ type thing, and it just feels right in my little copywriter brain. So that’s what I’m doing.

Naming any New Thing is tricky

This one was no different. I toyed with calling it Secret Diary of a Freelance Copywriter (à la Secret Diary of a Call Girl) but it was never going to be anonymous, so that makes no sense.

Then I thought of The Honest Diary of a Copywriter, because it’ll definitely be me and my (not always popular) opinions. But again, I don’t feel I can own that title, because I want the flex to change the odd name or fudge the odd detail – because nobody, client or colleague, wants to recognise themselves in an email or in a blog post (not that I’d ever publish something confidential or mean).

Finally, inspired by Adrian Mole, I settled on Diary of a Freelance Copywriter (aged 21 and some).

And then I changed my mind, went full circle and added a tiny detour.

So, the Not-So-Secret Diary of a Copywriter it is!

This feels right. It’ll be the inner workings and ponderings of my mind and musings about life as a freelance copywriter – sometimes more about freelancing, and at other times more about copywriting. Enjoy!
