Hi! Thanks for stopping by. Today we have the very first full interview for #MeetTheMegs.
If you missed the intro and are wondering what this Megs malarkey is all about, catch up here first.
All sorted? And sitting comfortably? In that case, let me introduce…
Megan Bowdler is a surface pattern designer based in Oxfordshire, combining her love of colour, pattern and florals to bring you beautiful interior products for your home. She designs a range of hand-painted prints, along with some developed purely with photographic elements, and all of her products are designed, manufactured and packaged in Britain.
Tell us about your work – what do you do?
I’m a surface pattern designer. I hand design a range of floral patterns, which are then digitally printed onto a range of cushions, mugs, placemats and coasters. I then sell these on Etsy, my online store, and soon craft fairs! I’ve always dreamt of having my designs printed onto homewares and love the idea of my mug sat in someone’s cupboard, or my hand painted cushion design on someone’s sofa. My designs are hand painted with ink or made up of photographic elements, which I build and layer on Photoshop before having them manufactured on to products to sell as gifts, or for you to treat yourself.
If you could use a time machine to help you research or plan your work, where would you go, what would you do, who would you meet and why?
If I could travel in time I’d like to travel forwards, find out what the current interior trends would be, along with the current trending colour palettes, allowing me to be ahead of the game in terms of designing!
If you could work from anywhere, where would you pick?
I’d always opt for a beach in a hot, sunny country, although I wouldn’t get much work done as I’d be too busy sipping cocktails all day. My studio at the bottom of the garden is equally as nice, especially when it’s cold and rainy outside and I’ve got a hot chocolate, listening to the rain while working!
Any Meg-related nicknames?
Just the standard Meg, Megs, Meggy and Megsy, which my grandad uses. Oh, and my boyfriend likes to refer to me as scotch egg, partially because it rhymes with Meg, but also due to my egg allergy, so original (eye roll).
What’s the best business advice you’ve ever been given?
The best business advice will always come from my dad, he’s always said if you don’t try, then how will you know if it’ll be successful? Simple advice but key when you’re doubting yourself or starting out. ‘You can if you think you can’ is key to developing and I’ve always considered this in every aspect of my life whether that be education, work or personal.
What superpower would make your work easier and why?
If I could fly that would be handy for shipping my products out, that way delivery doesn’t need to be thought about, I could ship across the world and personally meet my customers. Being able to fly and teleport would be quite useful in day to day life as well.
Other than your computer or phone, what’s the most important thing you use for your work?
A paintbrush. Majority of my homeware designs use my hand painted patterns, which consist of watercolour/ink and a good paintbrush.
If you could keep only three apps on your phone, which would you keep and why?
Instagram, notes and the weather app! Bit of a weird selection thinking about it, but Instagram because it is a great platform, especially visually, which is very important for my business. The notes app because I have a million lists on there when a notebook isn’t to hand, I am a list lover! Finally, the weather app, because who doesn’t check the weather each day to see if it’s coat or t-shirt weather?
There’s a zombie apocalypse brewing (eek, I know). Which three people (living, dead or, I guess, undead) would you want on your team and why?
This is a really difficult question, I’m thinking hard and I’m still not sure who I’d choose to have with me because either way, it wouldn’t end well. I’d probably choose to have my dad and my boyfriend on my team for moral support, and Lee Evans, just to lift the spirit of the team a little bit.
And to finish… some quick-fire questions! Early bird or night owl?
Neither, I love my bed too much in the evening as well the morning. If I had to choose, then probably more of an early bird?
Most used emoji?
The laughing crying face 😂
What did you have for breakfast this morning?
I had granola with strawberry and raisins with alpro milk, I’m a bit of a routine freak with my breakfast, I have this every morning.
Favourite fictional Meg?
Meg from Family Guy. Despite never watching a single episode of Family Guy, I’m voting for Family Guy purely because Mila Kunis plays her and I love Mila Kunis.
Where can we find out more?
Up next will be Megan Davies, food stylist, recipe writer and food illustrator. And if you want to find out more about THIS Megan (me, the one asking the questions), you can do that right here.
